Engineering case study based on the ESP Series Heavy-Duty Warning Light developed at Mucco Sinyalteknik.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

From Electronic Design to a Production-Ready Warning System

The ESP Series is a heavy-duty industrial warning product designed to provide both audible and visual signaling. The controller uses multiple wired inputs to select different warning behaviors and combines sound generation with controlled light output.

In this project, I was responsible for the electronic controller board design and the embedded firmware development using STM32. The system was developed as a complete hardware-software platform intended for practical industrial use and production.

ENGINEERING CHALLENGE

One Controller, Multiple Warning Behaviors

The controller needed to reliably interpret multiple wired control inputs and translate each input condition into a predefined audible warning behavior.

The system uses eight external wires in total: seven control inputs and one common connection. Applying the required voltage to a specific input allows the controller to activate the corresponding alarm behavior.

For RGB versions, the system also needed to control visual signaling while allowing light and sound to operate simultaneously as a coordinated industrial warning system.

SYSTEM OPERATION

Wired Input Control with Synchronized Sound and Light

Each control input represents a defined warning command. The embedded firmware evaluates the input state and selects the required audible and visual behavior.

The system provides seven different alarm selections through wired control. In RGB versions, the controller also supports multiple color outputs and different lighting behaviors, allowing visual signaling to operate together with the audible warning.

01

INPUT DETECTION

Seven independent control inputs are continuously evaluated by the controller.

02

ALARM SELECTION

Each valid input condition activates its assigned audible warning behavior.

03

LIGHT CONTROL

RGB versions support multiple colors and selectable visual warning modes.

04

SYNCHRONIZED OUTPUT

Sound and light can operate together as a coordinated industrial warning signal.

MY ENGINEERING WORK

Hardware and Firmware Developed as One Integrated System

My work on this product covered both the electronic hardware and the embedded software. This allowed the PCB, microcontroller, inputs and outputs to be developed and evaluated as one complete product rather than as separate engineering tasks.

01

HARDWARE DESIGN

Development of the controller electronics, circuit architecture, component selection and electrical interfaces required for the industrial warning system.

02

PCB DEVELOPMENT

Schematic capture, PCB layout, component placement and production-oriented board preparation for the product controller.

03

STM32 FIRMWARE

Embedded firmware development for input detection, alarm selection, light control, operating logic and coordinated sound-light behavior.
04

TESTING & PRODUCT REVISION

Functional testing of the hardware and firmware together, followed by revisions according to real product requirements and customer feedback.

PRODUCT EVOLUTION

Adding User-Controlled Sound Intensity

After the initial product development, a new customer requirement was introduced: the user needed the ability to control the output sound intensity.

The system was therefore revised to support adjustable volume control while preserving the existing warning functions. This required additional hardware and firmware development so that the new feature could be integrated into the existing product architecture without affecting normal operation.

01

INITIAL VERSION

Fixed Sound Output

The original product provided predefined warning behavior with fixed sound output levels.

02

UPDATED VERSION

User-Adjustable Sound Intensity

The product was revised to allow the user to control sound intensity while maintaining the existing alarm and lighting functions.
